Plank - Mockup by Shnatsel

Due to the usability flaw of intellihide and autohide, Shnatsel came up with the idea of semi-hiding Plank. Rather than wasting 48px of space, this idea uses only half and it reveals once mouse is being hovered to the dock.

Other than that, this layout can keep notification badges in focus so that the user will be notified.

This is how the desktop looks like when it is empty.

This idea seems to be much more productive and taking the dock usability and features to the next level. However, there is no word on whether this idea is going to be deploy on Plank.

What do you guys think about this idea ?

  1. This mock-up made my day. It's accessable, out of the way, brings balance by creating symmetry with Wingpanel and it leaves room for two well-implemented hotcorners (workspace management). Notifications on icons are indeed very handy too. Also seems to be the perfect mix for both Windows and Apple users who come to elementary. With the icons moving up when you hover anywhere over the dock, this is great. But will the icons hover over maximised screens? And would it be possible to keep them semi-hidden?

    <3 this. :)
